All of our fell races are licensed by the FRA (Fell Runners Association) and are run under FRA rules.
FRA races require runners to carry with them the following kit for the duration of the race:
- Waterproof jacket and trousers (with taped seams)
- Map (of the course), compass and whistle
- Hat and gloves
Please make sure that you have this kit when you come to registration as your kit will be checked and if you don’t have it, you will not be allowed to race.
All of our races are run in winter so may have difficult conditions including icy ground, high winds, poor visibility and cold temperatures. The races are for intended for fell runners, they are not walking events so please do not enter if you intend to walk the course.
RACE ONE 4th November: Stybarrow Dodd
Start Thirlmere People’s Hall, 11 AM
Parking is limited, please car share as much as possible. Parking is available in the People’s Hall C
ar Park, the track connecting the A591 to the B5322 by Castle Rock Car Park and the main A591 – please park as close to the side of the road as possible and take extra care walking along this road.
This race is the toughest of the series and packs in 2297ft of climbing in only 4 miles. It is virtually an out and back to the summit of Stybarrow Dodd but visits the top of Sticks Pass on the way out as well. In 2019, the race was run in deep snow and many people ran in spikes or crampons so come prepared for any weather conditions!
RACE TWO 2nd December : Clough Head
Start Threlkeld Quarry, 11 AM
Parking is limited, please car share as much as possible. Parking will be clearly signposted in the quarry and there will be a £1 parking charge which will go towards the Threlkeld Quarry Road Management Scheme.
Our second race is a tough 5m route with a lot of climbing. The race starts in the quarry and heads straight out onto the fell to begin the climb up to Clough Head summit – a total of 1870ft of climbing in a little over 2 miles. From Clough Head summit, it’s a flying runnable descent to the rocky summit of White Pike then turn left and pick the best line down to the gate and the quad track. From here any route across the lower fellside back to the top of the quarry and the final sprint along the quarry tracks all the way to King Kong Climbing Wall’s workshop and the finish!
